The work is exciting. Yet as in most jobs te pay could be a little better. The stability is wonderful. Come to work to work as well as enjoy the environment.
If you want to continue to serve your country in a different and unique capacity this is the place for.
The TSA is still young and growing. The moral is low in the airport, and the leadership is hit and miss.
because they can be unorganized at times
try your hardest and never give up make the job work for you
It is not the Department of Homeland Security that gets this rating its the Transportation Security Administration.
After 9/11, Dept. of Homeland Security was created (TSA) to be our front line of defense, which was a great idea. Unfortunately politics began to dictate every move and ruined the whole program. I was in the 1st class, signed up right after 9/11, we were a proud, educated, professional group. When I quit there were only 5 of us left. The ones to go before me were either fired over fabricated charges or just quit from disillusionment. I found NO teamwork or camaraderie-ship, just a cesspool of degenerates' clawing and backstabbing their way up the political ladder.
After 5 yrs I began to realize that TSA was NOT developed to secure our freedoms but instead to employ all the unemployable, unskilled, uneducated - virtually just to empty the unemployment ranks and put people to work who couldn't find jobs anywhere else. If you think that working for the Federal Government would be a great job than I think your watching too much T.V. Because of what I say, experienced and know now, I found it degrading. it got to the point that I was ashamed to say where I worked and embarrassed to wear the uniform. My final report read, "Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity of working in the Federal Government and to experience their infamous political system first hand. What it has done for me is to totally destroy my faith and confidence in our Federal Government.
mi experence My attitudes towards the confidential thing and reservation(reserve)
no
I actually work for a contract for the Department of Homeland Security. I think they are fine
We have a tough job to do, not everybody understands what it means
Buckle up it is going to be a bit rough
The employee's who work as Transportation Security Officers at the various airports are being under paid. Our level of work is equivalent to the people who are currently employed as Border Patrol Agents and the people who are employed by Customs, however, our pay is no where near the above mentioned agencies pay. Also, every year we are tested. You have two opportunities to pass the test. If you fail the test a second time, you will no longer have a job. I cannot remember exactly what year it was, but a coworker failed the test a second time and when they fired her, she had a heart attack and died. I have been with the Department of Homeland Security for five years and I would think that after five years, the testing would end. I am currently making less than twenty dollars an hour, but was promised while working for the previous security agency that was at the airport before the Department of Homeland Security took over, that once I became a Security Screener with the Department of Homeland Security, that I would receive a raise. I was making $14 an hour with the previous agency and when the Department of Homeland Security took over, I went down to making a little less than $14 an hour. Also, there is a program that is offered through the Office of Personnel Management which is a government agency. The program encourages federal employees to go back to school. It states that a government agency can pay up to $10,000 a year on a student loan for a Federal Government employee. It states that the individual had to have worked for the governement agency for at least three years or has to be willing to work for the government agency for at least three years. I contacted several people from the Department of Homeland Security and by the time someone was able to answer my inquiry regarding the program I was told that. "TSA does not participate in such a program and has no plans in the near future to do so." I could understand if they did not currently participate in the program, but to tell me that they are not even going to consider it?
There are several positions with the Department of Homeland Security. I would advise people not to apply as a Transportation Security Screener with the Department of Homeland Security, and if they do decide to apply for a job with the Department of Homeland Security, do not get too comfortable. What I mean by getting too comfortable is, do not go out and buy a house. Do not go out and buy a car. Do not rely on your income as a Transportation Security Officer to support your family. Why? Because at the beginning of the year if you fail the test a second time, you will not have a job to afford the above mentioned luxuries.
Because I would like a job with them!!!
was hired at the start of agency when it was under DOT (TSA). There was alot of confusion at the start and did not get any better the longer I was with the agency. I was going from one airport t the next and training people to be certified to work at checkpoint. Most of the time there was only one SOP for the whole airport, which was against SOP. You never got more than 12 hour notice before you were to travel to the next airport and there were several times that people were report AWOL at their next airport because they never recieved their orders to travel. Most airports were scambling to set things up to be in complince with the acts from congress and most of the time the screeners are the ones that got hurt. Most of the upper managemnet had no experince in security or working with goverment. Most of the upper management are only looking to protect themselves from being blamed for anything that happens at the airports. I could on and on about the waste that was seen or the complete disregard to follow the SOP and other directives from headquarters. I no longer fly because I no that it is even more unsafe than on the day of 9/11, It is very sad because most of the screeners are there to prevent that from happening again but upper management hamper that with out any that about security or the general public.
I would advice against any thing doing with TSA, till they start acting like security for the public.
Fast growing progressive co. Excellent training and advancement potential
No positions available at this time
they love our God and our protector of our great nation.
Protect Life and Limb , and property
NOT ENOUGH OPPORTUNITIES TO MOVE AHEAD
NOPE
DHS needs to enforce their laws regarding employers hiring illegal immigrants. If the illegal immigrants do not have any jobs to go to, then the desire to come into our country will be less.
Top management is insulated and isolated from workers. They manage by edict
Patience and low expectations
Employees are treated as though they are expendable my management and are abused daily by the general public. Management routinely promotes their favorites instead of the most qualified. Communication is the worst I've seen anywhere.
If you are interested in the Federal government, and in DHS specifically, just stay away from the TSA. Consider FPS, FEMA, CBP, ICE or civilian positions with the Coast Guard. While employed there (5 years) I talked with TSA employees across the nation and the concerns were the same; negative work environment, "whistle blower protection" is a joke, extremely poor communication up and down the chain. Every employer has it's quirks, but friends don't let friends work for TSA.
