We're gaining new adversaries and our military is shrinking, not good!

amf85 you be just a little more sympathetic to Russia? Is there anything Russia (or anyone else) could do that you would not find some way to blame the US? Why do people insist on making excuses for states like Russia--let Russia fight Russia's own battles. The more others misbehave, the greater the lovefest for some Americans. When does one ever just condemn behavior without pointing to something the US is perceived to have done. What aim does it serve to behave in this manner?

The West has actually been making every attempt to embrace Russia, for the sake of avoiding renewed hostilities. Russia's historic insecurity forces her to see every event as geopolitical encirclement. She doesn't seem to grasp that the more heavy handed she is, the more she forces states around her periphery into the arms of the West. Naturally this process would happen anyway, because these states want access to consumer and capital markets, US defense protection, and insurance against a resurgent Russia. The West's goal is not to isolate Russia, that would only be harmful to both sides. The Allies would like to not have to continually worry about Russia, a key state in global politics, but she insists on isolating herself.

Actually, in a way Russia is right. Each of the last few US president's have broken their promises to not move into Russia's backyard, and have pushed NATO to creep ever closer to Russia, all the while putting in new bases and defense networks all around Russia. It is no wonder that Russia feels like it is being forced to protect itself. I would say, however, that rather than Russia building the curtain out of satellite states, NATO is building it out of FORMER satellite states...or at least trying to.

Seems like they want to create one but don't want to take the blame for it.

It's not a push, it's refocusing the blame. It seems is if they are creating a new "Iron Curtain" for themselves purposefully and blaming the West for their stances. Meanwhile they've been picking on those former satellite nations constantly since Putin has been in power there.

the US's increasingly aggressive stance abroad doesn't seem to have made us irrellevant...I don't see why it should do so for Russia. Condi, like Bush, is all bluster and no substance, trying to cover up their misjudgment with regards to Russia's strength and stubbornness.
