There is a new bill being proposed that would allow federal retirees to get a bulk payment for their unused sick leave upon retirement. Should federal employees get this benefit? What would be the best option for you?

That perk was one thing they yanked away from the previous CSRS retirement system and started the FERS system. Employees under the older CSRS system could use their unused sick leave towards their retirement years. So, if they had 2080 sick hours they would actually get 1 year added to their retirement. That equats to a little over 1% more per year in their pocket, which over time is a decent amount. However, employees under FERS had this stripped away and usually end up "Burning" leave (taking sick leave over and over until they are down to 0 as they get close to retirement. For this reason, I believe paying employees for unused sick leave is a plus for both sides. When employees burn leave it hurts everyone else because their slot is still open, yet they get away with so much and leave all the work to everyone else. Buy paying them, production will go up and moral. M2C

Federal employees should be entitled to any unused sick leave. Otherwise, we do have a situation in which many employees feel "compelled" to use some or all of that leave before they depart, and this causes some disruption in the system. Allowing employees to apply any unused sick leave towards their retirement would promote better attendance towards the end of an employee's career.
