Disagreeing with the Man

Posted 9 months ago I was considering pursuing my government career in my home state of Texas but both local and state politics are too conservative for my taste. SO I moved California, which is a bit more liberal than I am. What's one to do when you don't necessarily agree with your bosses' agenda? |

Posted 9 months ago Keep your politics on the downlo in terms of what party you affiliate with. Save that for the dinner table and after dinner drinks. Be sure, however, that if you disagree with something that you speak up. Don't make it about "liberal" vs "conservative" but rather what is best for the people. Be sure to back up your arguement with hard evidence, espeically if it will effect the bottom line.

Posted 9 months ago Why worry about politics when it comes to your job. Just be glad that you have one and do the best that you can on that job or in your case your career.

Posted 2 months ago Is this really about politics or about some decisions he/she is making? If political, step up to the plate, but not in the "in your face" type. Turns people off. You can agree to disagree. That way everything is kosher between the two of you and your boss should respect that.

Posted about 1 month ago well just ask yourself is this worth my time and am I getting paid enough to deal with the crap......if not then switch

Posted about 1 month ago You're right. There are times when you have to confront the boss and let him/her know, other times, it's definitely not worth it.

Posted about 1 month ago it is all that you can do is make the best choice for yourself

Posted about 1 month ago Two things I try never to discuss at work (as they all say) are politics and religion. And there are laws against political influence in the office (the Hatch Act - http://www.osc.gov/hatchact.htm). You can decline talking about it in the office and not worry about your job.

Posted about 1 month ago I can understand the reasoning because both are very hot topics where people can be very zealous for either. If we can learn to agree to disagree, it wouldn't have to be out of place or wrong to discuss. You only have a limited amount of time in many cases to have your lunch. Sit back, enjoy the food, and have a relaxing conversation, even though you might always agree with what someone else says. That can be done on any topic.

| Posted about 1 month ago My boss is really, really, REALLY orthodox jewish, and is radically in favor of Israel over Palestine, while I think Israel is a bully and needs to be forced to obey the rules by the international community. So what do I do?
I never, EVER talk about Israel in the office. My boss is a great guy, why make things uncomfortable and tense by bringing up things that don't need to be? The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."

Posted about 1 month ago You can really learn from him. Whether he is orthodox or ultra-orthodox, let him alone on that subject. He has his views, you have yours. You think that the Israelis are bullies. There are bullies everywhere. In this case, I believe your boss. There shouldn't be a Road Map to Peace to divide the land and Jerusalem shouldn't be divided. The land shouldn't be divided. Yet, because they want peace in their homeland, they are willing to give up to the Syrians, the Arab states, the land they won in the '67 war. This land was given back to them in 1948 by votes from the UN. They don't get offensive, their defensive. Seems like you answered your own question. Just one more thing. They are willing to have Arabs as their friends and citizens of the country. Some Arabs are not always Israeli - friendly. Like having an enemy living in your backyard. What you can compare it to is brothers who don't get along. The Israel line goes all the way back to isaac, Sarah's and Abraham's son. The Arab line goes all the way to Ishmael, Abraham's and Hagar's son. Thus, they are half brothers. Israel is only as big as the state of New Jersey. Would you give one piece of New Jersey to someone that doesn't agree with you? But they do only if it's to keep the peace. Sounds like you have a great boss. I like him already.

| Posted about 1 month ago I like him too! However, the boss-employee relationship doesn't really allow for the type of ideological dissagreement that this discussion would engender. So, while I'm quite comfortable having it with you, I'm not at all comfortable having it with him.
I personally like the latest idea that is floating around, a single, bi-national state, the best. Not that THAT has the slightest chance of happenening.
If the region is going to be split up, I think it should be done on the agreed-upon UN lines, with Jerusalem being an internatinoal city under the jurisdiction of the international community and regulated by UN troops or a join task force from many countries.
I would HATE to give away a part of New Jersey to someone that doesnt agree with me...which is why I understand how the Palestinians feel when half of Palestine was taken away from them and given to Israel! The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."

Posted about 1 month ago Politics and religion all in one conversation, ouch! Best that you keep your boss on the good side and leave that topic alone! I gotta think that he may be a little PO'd at the US for helping (sort of by mistake) the wolves surround Israel by causing Hezbollah and Hamas be legitimate poilitcal parties in Lebanon and Palestine, thus suurounding Israel with their enemies. But that's a topic best left for AFTER work!

Posted about 1 month ago Best you do your job, and the boss does their job. Professional disagreements aside, don't get involved with personal disagreements. If you're gonna be a bear....be a grizzly...

Posted about 1 month ago good advice have had to do that out here sometimes and it is usually with commanders and all based on what I am telling them and what not

Posted about 1 month ago If you want to talk to someone about Israel we can do it here. Don't approach him with the subject. A lot of times doesn't matter what the topic, it's better to let the boss open the door first. That way, you'll know how to respond.

Posted about 1 month ago I exercise discernment by privately -- or if allowed, publically -- realizing it would be a boring world, if everyone agreed with each other. Then, I focus on proper protocol, avoid insubordination, and take action by fulfilling my dutiful obligations. My personal beliefs still do get rendered in an artform -- such as writing, performance, song, and visual projects -- where the privacy of persons involved becomes protected via fiction.
