Here is a hypothetical. You are a permanent employee with any Federal Agency (DoD, USPS, DOT,etc). You find an incredible job that has many attributes you desire. You interview and get chosen! Now, here is the catch. The job is a TERM position. In the civil service world you have TEMP, TERM, and PERMANENT. This job will end in 2 years, unless there is a need for the job and it is converted to PERMANENT, or extended a few more years (no guarantees). To keep things simple, just think of it as a two year job and then your employment will END. Do you take the job for the experience and try to get hired as a PERMANENT employee again, or forget the hassle and don't take the chance?

Life is all about chance and life is what we make of it. I believe everything happens for a reason, and if this position has been offered to me, I would take the opportunity in a heartbeat. Nothing is guaranteed forever! If we want to expand our knowledge base, our life experiences and grow, we must be willing to take some chances. What a GREAT hypothetical question!

I agree, take the chance! Get your experience and move on and upwards. Life waits for no one, so those who you here say "I would stay in my comfort zone" are probably the ones who have been there for 20 years and just wishing some promotion would come their way. Wishing means that no effort is involved to receive the outcome, which is more like a miracle because you will get to the point you desire faster with focused effort than wishful thinking. Also, luck is disguised as hard work.

Take the risk, and get the experience.

Take the job, and make sure in the two years you are A) making yourself and the job indespensible, and B) looking for other jobs.

It would be great to take the job.  My question is are you single or married?  If married, is your spouse working or at home?  Have children? Are they young?  Would you put all these to risk, while getting the experience, the job was ended, what would you do next?  If the job turned into permanent, then you have your dream job.  All these things must be taken into account when you decide to take on a temporary job.

I too would take the risk and gain further experience.  Experience is one of the key elements the employers look for today and without it jobs are hard to come by.

In my situation, no. I would not have applied for a temp position in the first place.

I guess that would depend on how much I was risking.

I'm married with a son, so the relaible income is really important. The networking and position could weigh heavily with the next job. From what I understand, term positions don't roll over into permanent until the end, which is a little scary to me.

I'd have to say, maybe! If the pay was right and the job functions were directly in line with my career path then most likely yes.

There was a time that I would have taken the chance and loved the experience .  But right now, I couldn't afford to take the chance.  Too much at stake for my family.  I've always felt that civil service was "dependable" or "secure".  After being in a RIF situation 3 different times within the past 14 years, I realize that civil service is NOT secure.  Although I survived each RIF to be placed in another civil service position, and recently I was promoted to the best position I've had so far, I realize that it's only by the grace of God, not the government, that I am still in civil service and thriving during a time that most are losing.  and it's not temporary!!!

It's by the grace of God that all of us that have jobs, because there are many employers that are downsizing.

What do you really want to do? I would go for it because I don't need much live-on money. Two years is all the time I need to be self employed.

(oops)

For me, it would depend on how valuable the risk is to you. Is this temporary, but career-ideal experience worth losing your current permanent job over if and/or when it's not extended?

Regardless of duration or nature, you never know what a new and exciting opportunity may bring you (aside from related work-experience, of course).

So, start with the practical pros and cons analysis in consideration of your values. When talking values (for me), it's not so much how many at stake, but rather their weight or importance up against each other: what you can or cannot live without.

Whatever happens, at the very least - you know you thought it through as best you can and you'll be better informed if ever faced with a similar situation in the future.
