Hey, I've been around the govt system for over 25 years, both military and civilian. If I can help anyone, feel free to contact me.

Hello everyone I'm new to this board.

I've been researching government jobs all summer and would extremely interested working for the government (rather than the private sector). I'm currently entering my last year in college and will obtain a B.A. in Political Science when I graduate in June 2009. There are a couple of questions that I have. Feel free to contact me using this website.

1. How early should I start applying for government jobs before I graduate?

2. I have no prior work experience and I'm extremely worried that this might be a huge liability in getting hired. How can I make a decent resume if I have no work experience?

Scooby:

Wow really this early? I need to finish my resume ASAP then. So far all the jobs that I have found are all located in the Washington D.C. metro area. I currently live in Orange County, CA and so far have found only one job opening located in my area (L.A.) that really interests me. I'm really intrigued to move to D.C. though so location isn't really a problem (as long as it is in a big city).

As stated in my earlier post, I have no prior work experience, mostly focused on my studies and did some volunteer work for Obama. Does anyone have any general ideas on what I should put on a resume?

With no prior work experience, you may have to look into an internship program.

Any idea on what type of internship I should look at? I've been trying to find internships around my area in the Poli Sci/ Int'l Relations area and I haven't found one that would be appealing. Would it be harder for me to just apply for government jobs even with no work experience? I do have good grades though so I would qualify for the GS-7 grade.

The degree might qualify you for the GS7/9, but with no prior experience, you could be facing an uphill battle. Check with the large federal police/law enforcement agencies about inter programs.

Would I have an easier time if I applied at the GS-5 level?

it is always good to apply for many levels not just one specific an then choose the one you get slected for and look at the career progression and the time it would take you to move upto the next level and see whether it would be worth it. But once you are in the system you will be able to move around alot better. I have talked to alot of government and private contractors out here in IRAQ and they say broaden your search and not jusy narrow yourself down to one specific thing uless you want to.....

Vinn: GS-5 and GS-7 positions tend to be entry level and are open to more people. It normally is easier to get into thses positions as the agency plans to train you.
