Our wonderful electoral system

Posted 6 months ago As the democratic primary comes to a close, its looking more and more like the candidate that more people voted for is going to...lose. Because the winner is picked primarily through the delegates rather than popular vote...just as the electoral college screwed over the democrats previously in the 2000 presidential contest. Anyone else see the similarity? I'm an independent, so I didn't vote for Hillary OR Obama in the primary. Honestly, I wouldn't pick either of them if I had a choice, but since its gonna be one of them or a Republican, I'll end up voting for the Democrat come the presidential election. Nonetheless, the fact that this type of thing keeps happening, where the person who recieved the most votes LOSES because of the way our system is set up...dissapoints me greatly (I was going to use...stronger tems). | Posted 6 months ago I feel the exact same way. It's interesting: the fact that we don't rely strictly on the popular vote indicates, to me at least, that we are still fundamentally at odds with a truly democratic democratic process. It's almost as if a mistrust of the general public is written into the process itself. Otherwise, why not rely entirely on popular vote? |

| Posted 6 months ago Are you people retarded?
Do you drink the swill wine that is the Hillary Clinton press machine?
OBAMA WON THE POPULAR VOTE YOU IDIOTS.
Also, the US Constitution (which regulates the national elections) has NO POWER over the primaries. The parties can do as they please regardless.
We are a DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC. Not a direct democracy. Furthermore, there is no electoral college in the primaries, just delegates based on how the parties deal with their shit (FYI no superdelegates before 1984! POW!) Florida and Michigan's politicians are to blame for this. If Obama had campaigned in either state he would've done better than what the compromise is giving him. It doesn't even matter because MCCAIN 2008! |

Damn, you're an angry one! First, I guess I need to repeat that I am an independent, since it didn't sink in. Second, I get my news, including election news, from the BBC, since I dont trust American publications to not be biased about American news, much less the candidates themselves. Third, everything I've read says that so far Clinton is ahead in the popular vote. Instead of flexing your epeen by yelling insults at us over the internet, you could post a link that supports your statement that Obama is in fact ahead in the popular vote. Next, I never said that the constitution had any power over the primaries, nor that their was an electoral college in them, only that once again the victor may be the politician with the least votes, a result which shouldn't happen. Obviously we aren't a direct democracy, direct democracies never work in any society of great size, but we ARE a representative democracy (supposedly...). The politicians in Florida and Michigan are responisble for their own states' problems, true, but not for the whole system's problems. And yes, Obama would certainly have done better if he had campaigned there...perhaps he should have done so, aye?
Honestly, I don't like ANY of the candidates. At all. Before McCain started sucking up to President Bush, I was actually in favor of him. Now...I kinda wanna just stick my head in the sand (I wont...but I want to) and pretend these candidates aren't the best our country supposedly has to offer. If I had to pick now, I would pick Biden...but of course, that isn't one of the large number--I mean....two--choices we will have available to us come the general.
This election is going to be ridiculously terrible. After all the idiocy Bush has put us through, it should be a cakewalk for the Democrats. Too bad they couldn't come up with a real campaign strategy to save their lives! The majority is against the republicans, but the stupid Obama vs. Clinton rivalry has become so bitter that no matter WHO wins the democratic primary half the party will hate their candidate, and be reluctant at best--unwilling at worst--to support the candidate they end up with.
Hooray! Hooray! The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."
