I started looking for a government job about 3 months ago.  I've probably applied for about 50.  I get rejections everyday.  Usually they tell me that my score was 95 or 96 and it just wasn't good enough to be referred at this time.  I don't have any vet preference or anything.  Does anyone out there have any tips on how I can get a job in accounting or administration?  Is there some secret I don't know or are there jobs that they get very few applicants for because of the locations or whatever, I'm willing to relocate to - I just need a job.  I have a BS degree in accounting and an MBA.  Help me please.

Are you getting interviews?  What does the score mean, and how are they rating you?  sorry i'm new to this gov job thing.

So far I have gotten 1 telephone interview and have had 2 positions where I have to fill out a ton of forms and send them in.  Both of those jobs aren't going to be filled until October.  I need a job now but I filled out all of the paperwork and sent it in.

I think you have to have a score above 70 to be considered for a job.  You can get a score of up to 100 without vet preference.  With vet preference you can get an additional 5 points.  If a score of 95 or 96 isn't good enough maybe I should just give up on a government job.  I have even been told that a score of 97.67 wasn't good enough to be considered.

What are the scores and what is a vet preference?

And, if someone could be so kind - what jobs don't require BA's?

MmHotdish,

Have you tried pursued any of the more 'personalized' methods of trying to job hunt - for example, attending Job Fairs, using LinkedIn and other social media sites to meet department higher-ups, and other methods of networking?  It sounds to me that you have the skills, but need some good referrers to vouch for your talents.

Kyle,

I think that this approach is a good one but not for everyone.  Why?  Well, take LinkedIn for example, when I first started to try and expand my network I hit a wall.  I didn't really have enough people responding.  Then the next HUGE wall was the fact the only way to really benefit was to become a full member which meant paying a pretty substantial fee.  The 'free' services don't really cut it when you are trying to get to know people.

Sure, there are the forums such as this but one only has so much time during the day to work 8, drive 2 1/2, help kids with homework, help with dinner and then interact with the spouse.  I know that not everyone is in this same boat and it does come down to how much you really want it, but these networking sites seem to require a bit too much cash to really reap the full benefits.

What I would like to see on a sight like this, if those that are in already are willing to help, is a resume workshop.  One where we can post our resumes and have people who are willing to look them over give us tips on changing wording around to match up better with the government lingo.

Anyway, I think that the networking services are good if you 'know' people already.  And they participate.  If not, you are kind of cut off from the people that you really need to sync up with.
