Breaking into Government Jobs

Posted 3 months ago What if you've never had a government job and you don't have a BA? I only have an AA. What kind of jobs can one expect to land and will the government aid me in achieving my BA financially? Also, when would one have time to finish a BA & work a full-time government job? |

| Posted 3 months ago If you've never had a govt job, you can still get one. Might have to start at the bottom, but it's taht way everywhere. Having a degree is good, but I think alot of people are under the impression that you NEED one to get a job. If you have a degree in English and want a job in biology, the one doesn't help the other. Yes, the government has programs to help pay for higher education, particularlly if it pertains to your position. Two people that work for me are currently enrolled, one for an AA and the other for a BA. Not sure about the time thing, but they figure it out. The biggest thing about moving forward in a govt position is to get into the system in the first place. If you're gonna be a bear....be a grizzly... |

| Posted 3 months ago I need help getting a gov't job. I'm a veteran with over 9yrs of active and reserve duty. I was a 71L (known as Administrative Specialist) while in the military. When I separated (involuntarily I might add) from the Army in 2000, I got a job working on a Welfare-to-Workforce project with the Department of Jobs and Family Services in Cincy, OH. I started out as a Transistional Coordinator, monitoring clients work participation in the project. Then I moved on to a Greeter/Vocational Assessor position, this job entailed greeting clients and placing them in first day services (either helping them secure daycare, assigning them to approved work activities, etc). I worked in the Social Services field for roughly about 3yrs. I've also worked in the Legal field for a short time as a HR Clerk/Secretary and a Receptionist. My most recent employment was with the Department of Treasury (IRS) as a Remittance Perfection Clerk GS0503-04 (processing payments) during this past tax season. The job was only for an excepted time ( which was about 2mos). I've applied for several jobs on USAJOBS.gov and nothing has come through for me. I've gotten several emails, that I was among the well qualified but have not been called since the tax season. I've applied for Tax Examining Tech jobs, Clerk positions, Human Resource Asst., Secretary, etc. I've even applied for USAR Technician positions to try and go back in the military. At one point I thought I was sure to get to go back in, when I had applied for this Unit Administrator position and I received a call from the 1SG of the unit (an Engineer Bn) in Sharonville. This was around the Christmas holiday. I was told that they hoped to make the decision around the 1st of the year. I think at one point CPOL sent me an email stating that the selecting official had made a selection but an acceptance hadn't been received. I think what ended up happening was the position was cancelled. This gets kind of frustrating because on one hand the gov't needs all this help or so they say there's all these jobs that need to be filled and then on the other hand, you have someone like me, a veteran with more than 10 years of office/clerical/administrative experience and who wants to work for the gov't. I'd even consider going overseas to work for the gov't. So anyone with any advice, any job prospects, let me know. I welcome the assistance! ps. don't know why i shared all that. didn't mean to go into all that. sorry |

| Posted 3 months ago Just some things to ponder. Don't limit yourself to one area. Look for positions in the 301, 341, 343 series. Maybe expand your search outside your local area. Get your resume reviewed, or do it yourself before each JOA submission. Read my ten tips. Talk to you local VA job counselor. I know it's frustrating, but ya gotta keep plugging. | Posted 2 months ago Hi. I have a question that I hope someone can answer. I've been trying to get a govenrment job for sometime now as you can see in a previous post (practically ran down my life story). This could be the break I've been waiting for, just not sure I wanted it to be AK. Ok, so here's the question: I applied for several different position on USAJobs and one for DFAS-DEU (Delegated Examining Unit). It was for a Military Pay Clerk position and the had many openings in various locations. I can't remember if the one I clicked on was for Ft. Richardson, AK or not but it may could have been. At any rate, I received an email that my resume was recvd and processed. I got that on 8/18. Then I recvd a NOTICE of CONSIDERATION on Wednesday. The email states that "It is a Letter of Inquiry ONLY" and not an offer to employment. However, I have until 8/31 to reply by completing an OF-306 form and submitting my DD-214 to claim Veterans Preference. So, my question(s) are: How can I find out which geographical locations I requested? And lets say hypothetically, that if I submit for further consideration of the position, "How in all likelihood would I be offered the position?" These are some of the stipulations (if you wil) outlined in the first email I recvd: Your resume will remain active in our database for 90 days from the date of receipt with the following exceptions. If you accept a permanent appointment, fail to reply to official correspondence, decline consideration until a later date, or decline consideration due to finding other employment, your resume becomes inactive and you must reapply for further consideration. If you decline a position based on location, the geographic code for the location, including code 9999, will be removed for future positions. If you decline a position based on the grade or type of position, i.e., term or temp, you will no longer be considered for that grade or type of position. It is a permanent position. Any advice or comments are definitely welcome.

| Posted 2 months ago I'm not sure that you can generically find out what location you applies for unless you ask the hiring agency, which I recommend against. The agency seems pretty strict about letting you decline, but that may be to limit general appliers. If you're gonna be a bear....be a grizzly... |

| Posted 2 months ago Thanks again Scoob...for the prompt answer to my question(s) however, you forgot to answer one and that was: "What is the liklihood that I could be offered one of these positions?" Also, what if I already completed a OF-306 form for another previous position. Do I still need to complete another one for this position? Thanks again

| Posted 2 months ago Wouldn't even hazard a guess as to the likelyhood. Can't fortell the future yet, but I'm working on it! You will probably have to do a 306 for each agency. Just paperwork stuff. If you're gonna be a bear....be a grizzly... |

| Posted 2 months ago Check for the 301, 303, 341 and 343 job series. I would start with generic searches of USAJobs for those series in your area. If you're gonna be a bear....be a grizzly... |

| Posted about 1 month ago Scooby - since you have so much knowledge for government employment, is there a chance you might review a resume, or can you direct me to someone who could. I don't want to post it until I am sure I am hitting all the key KSAs and using proper terminology. I have many great opportunities here at White Sands Missile Range,NM; Ft. Bliss, Texas and at Holloman A.F.B. in Alamogordo, NM. I would greatly appreciate it. Stella |

| Posted 14 days ago Start by looking for internships in the Congressional or Senate offices for that area. The lack of experience may require you to start at entry level or in an internship. If you're gonna be a bear....be a grizzly... |

You might also want to apply with Raytheon. I have a friend who landed a great job in Australia with them. He was a retired Navy E-6 with a cryptology background. |
