I am currently seeking a government job. I currently do not have a college degree. In addition, I need some advice on how to better my chances in obtaining a federal job. I do have a federal resume, which I think is good. I have had a few people read it and they agree. I am currently working in the health care field as a Referral and Pre-Authorization Coordinator over seeing insurance functions for a clinic. I have been in this position for 6 ½ years. I have applied for quit a few positions on USAJOBS all in entry-level positions. However, I have not had any success with any callbacks. What else should I do to at least get an interview?

Gear your resume towards the individual job announcement. Each are different, so you shouldn't use the same resume. Hit hard on your experience including what the results of your actions were. Remember that an employeer won't read a book for a resume. Keep it short and straight. Don't try to BS in it. After it's submitted, call the point of contact and find out what the next steps are.

Doh, wish I would have read this post before I posted my topic.  Thanks for the advice.

Now, I have come across a couple positions that do not have a point of contact.  Is there an easy way to find the HR rep responsible?

Thanks!

Mike,

Most job announcements list a point of contact, go with them. If not, touch base with the servicing HR office.

I think it's is harder to break into these government positions without a degree because most of them list this as a requirement.  Although I'm a few classes from my BA I don't bother to apply for these positions because I assume that they won't even look at my application w/o my degree.

Depends on the position hwillny. Some definitly require a degree, but there are alot more that don't.

Well, thank you all for your advice. Nevertheless, in the last few days I have received a few offers all starting in the GS 7/8 range.

I applied with experience alone. In addition, I will be finishing my degree soon. It all comes down to being aggressive during your search I was applying for two positions a day that I met qualifications with experience alone. Thanks again your advice it has helped and been greatly appreciated
