So, is it just me

Posted 2 months ago Or did Gov Central go from being just me, Scoob, and Kyle (essentially) to going crazy with new posts and groups? The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."

Posted 2 months ago Things have definitely been picking up around here. I think it is starting to make a lot of the site's features more robust. amf, I hope this is easing some of your frustrations with the activity feed et al!

Posted 2 months ago For how long was it approximately just you three? I've been getting the GovCentral e-mails for a while now but for some reason I decided to join now.
Posted 2 months ago It wasn't literally "us three" - we were just the most active users of the site. Many of GovCentral's users just look for jobs, and don't use the social networking aspects. I think, slowly we're changing that.

Posted 2 months ago Well, my activities will slow down a little once my clearance finalizes and I move to my new location down the street with the client. Right now I'm sitting in a corner without a whole lot to do so I'm on GovCentral all day!

Posted 2 months ago If I can put my two cents in. The social part is growing. It's time to do some networking and encouragement. I remember when I was trained to be an MA we were told to go to bars and churches to network -- no one trusted talking with anyone online. You still have to be careful, but this has become fun while looking for a job and while you're doing that job hunting, you've got people who are holding you up and helping you pointing you in a direction you didn't think to go.

Actually, it makes it worse, now the profusion of threads and posts are even harder to keep track of as they grow in numbers! However, I know you guys are working on it, and I really am happy to have more people posting, the site is a lot more fun with more people participating! And one of these days someone will join who will respond to my increasingly controversial (and possibly insane) policy suggestions in the partisan politics forum, and then I can REALLY have some fun! | Posted 2 months ago You just try to get people riled up to see what they're made of. What's neat is that you keep people on their toes -- controversial or not! |

Bah, what's the point in living a long life if you don't have any fun! The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."

Posted 2 months ago People are reaching out to others to help them get a job. Yeah, there have been a lot of groups and discussions running, but people need to get a lot off their minds while looking for the job of their dreams. In the era of internet and applying on line instead of going to employers and filling out forms, there' s really no one to talk to except for those with whom they work and those without jobs who do they have but their friends. I wish I had known this existed 4 years ago when we moved here from NJ! My husband's job moved us here and we didn't have anyone to talk to about jobs. Networking has changed from going to bars, although I'm sure that still happens, or depending on friends we see or talk with from time to time for leads. I've seen a lot of frustration because the job that they're looking for or what they went to school for isn't coming along. This brings them a way to get a little of that frustration while looking and waiting for someone to have that call come to them saying that they have that job. You give them direction with the articles of what to do and what to expect. You keep reminding them what this is for-- looking for a government job, how to do it and what to expect. You encourage people and that's just what they need.

Posted 2 months ago That's it peacebe. People don't know how to get into the system. They find it easier to get advice and info in a less formal, more jovial setting. Get that, we're jovial! If you're gonna be a bear....be a grizzly...

Posted 2 months ago ScoobyDoo, we are jovial. If this was a site where you just go, look for information, and that's pretty much it, would you have the readership and the "following" that's there ? People are looking for direction. People don't know how to go about achieving their dreams or the goals they have planned. Here they get friends they would not normally get, with others helping them along the way to getting the job that they've been talking about and have some fun doing it. Issues are brought up that people care about that touch everyone's heart at some point and time. We don't make eye contact anymore with future employers unless we get that call; that's because of the internet. Because the internet is powerful, we can get twice the amount of resumes sent out than we would have if we had to hoof it from place to place!

Posted 2 months ago I'm encouraged (being new to these forums myself) that the volume has increased. I agree that this should be more than a place to see job listings and post resume's, but a place to actually network and meet people. Networking iskey to understanding how to apply for certain jobs and what jobs are available. Mostly because it gives people a connection inside an organization and insight to positions beyond a listing. I hope this forum continues to grow and people do actually connect to encourage and help with finding jobs, like Peacebe mentioned. It's also good to connect to help each other through the process of finding the dream job, blowing off a little steam and making an argument.

Posted 2 months ago It would be neat to talk with someone who has a job that you might be looking for, find out how he/she got it, and then follow it up yourself. You can't get that by just looking at ads in the paper or on the internet. The other things they are the frosting on the cake. Even if the frosting is another color like blue (or in the case of a commercial down here) green. You meet people, encourage them, make them believe that something is out there for them to work at. Don't let anyone get frustrated because the jobs they are finding and even getting interviews for are not coming about as fast as they would like. A good laugh, a beautiful thought, a comment made on a wall. What a way of encouragement and all of those tags! People need to read those to see what people think they are. It's like looking at your resume and saying, "What did I accomplish?" They know what they did, but they wonder what their accomplishments are, especially those who are older when the resume was set up differently than it is today. By helping one another, what a way of making friends that really stick in your mind and this way you can say to yourself, this person is really insightful. He/She helped me a lot. Pushed me beyond my mental/emotional limits to where I am now. You get lasting friendships this way. You may never see or meet them, but you have touched their lives in some way.

Posted about 1 month ago I can't believe how many out here have degrees! If you're gonna be a bear....be a grizzly...

Posted about 1 month ago going to college for 4 years and getting a degree is the american way of life that is what are parents tell go to school get a college degree you will get a good paying job and be set for life to bad that is not all so true anymore you now need both experience and a degree to be competitive in the world job market

Posted about 1 month ago I agree scooby it was either go to college and take out student loans to pay beucase my parents where not bank rolling me like most of my freinds and I could not qaulify for alot of state/fed aide because my parents were in a diffrent tax bracket so I joined the army got a good job that not only will make me competitive with my peers that just got there degrees and are going to spend the first 2-3 years paying off there student loans, and I will go to school for free and work making money and saving for my future.....but I gave 5 years of my life to the military and getting deployed so I think it is an even trade and the best decision I could have made when I was 18 and right out of highschool. But these are my own personell thoughts

Posted about 1 month ago so what route did you choose??
Posted about 1 month ago Don't get me wrong, I'm just saying that it's harder to get that first foot in the door without a degree. Once someone gives you that chance and sees that you're a hard worker and just as competent as a college grad then everything is good. Everyone doesn't get that chance to prove what they can do and therefore struggle to be competitive or move up.

Posted about 1 month ago yeah a good combination of both is what alot of people are looking for so that is what I am aiming at
