In my opinion, the most famous song of all time is "Yesterday", originally written by The Beatles.  Just look at how many times it has been covered:

Elvis Presley Sings Yesterday (Live, 1970)

Frank Sinatra sings "Yesterday"

Ray Charles - Yesterday

The Supremes- Yesterday

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Yesterday

Marvin Gaye - Yesterday

Judith Durham (The Seekers ) sings Yesterday

Tom Jones Sings "Yesterday"

"Yesterday" Performed By Linkin Park, Jay Z, and Paul McCartney

Bob Dylan and George Harrison play "Yesterday"

Gladys Knight & The Pips - Yesterday

SOLIS String Quartet - "Yesterday"

Yesterday was and still is popular.  Both sung and instrumental.

Now you have Amazing Grace and God Bless America.  Kate Smith used to sing God Bless America at almost every 76er's game while she was living. Did you ever hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing this song?  Wonderful rendition. Amazing Grace is played on the bagpipes everytime there is a death, remember 9/11?

Another famous song is Aretha Franklin's Respect.  She's not a generational singer.  Many people have heard her, also think about this song which she made famous.  Others have done this song, also, but not as well as she did.

Is there another song that people think is a famous song?  There are some classical pieces that have been turned into, at the time, popular.  What's popular or famous to you?  We have Yesterday, Amazing Grace,  what else?

Seems completely off track, but the first thing I thought when I read the title, before reading the responses was, "Happy Birthday".  Sounds lame now after reading such good suggestions...  :P

Happy Birthday is the most famous.  It even beats Yesterday.  It not only is sung by the familiar tune, but also in rap, hip hop, and other music types.

Crazy is good.  It's one of those songs that passes through the generations.

Great song from Carousel.  Then there's "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the Sound of Music.

Interesting when you hear about the old songs and that some are a testimony to others.
